A Home For The Soul
Have you ever been a guest at a house where the home impressed you so much you said to yourself: Dannnng! The kind of home where you start day dreaming of putting on a robe with some loafers and strolling around the place pretending you own it. Or have you ever been invited to a wedding reception so beautiful and luxurious you find yourself wanting to put up your pinky when you sip from your glass even though most of the time you drink from a plastic cup. When you are invited into beautiful places or luxurious events, if you are anything like me you start thinking about how much all this stuff cost. In the end you just feel lucky to feel the embrace of luxury if only for the few hours that you are there and you want to whisper back to luxury “don’t let me go baby.”
Well there is this story in the bible (Proverbs 9) where “Lady Wisdom” is building a house on a hill overlooking the city. The story goes that the house is very large held up by 7 beautiful custom designed columns. What’s more is that Lady Wisdom is having a great banquet serving things so good you are going to want to wrap them in a napkin and hide them in your wife’s purse (Don’t worry I don’t judge you). What we don’t know yet at this point in the story is the purpose of this party or the building of this luxurious home? To our great shock we come to find out that the custom built home and party is to host “The simple and those who lack judgement.” That’s right, Lady Wisdom is building this home and throwing this party for people who are struggling to make life work! People familiar with heartache and drama. Can you imagine who showed up at the door and what they said to themselves when they walked in?! What’s more they must have been surprised when Lady Wisdom wanted to make them part owner of the home.
In many ways this is the story of when God invited me into his house and made an investment in me. I remember a time in my life where my life at home was full of drama and chaos. It seemed like our family could not go a day without fighting and it always seemed to get worse. I needed relief and I needed to be taught a better way to overcome life’s problems. When I first walked into the house of God I was really skeptical and sat in the back. But in this house I started to hear about God’s love for me and it started to make a difference. I also found that I could unload the trash of my life on a weekly basis rather than have it stay stuck and contaminate my heart. It felt good to have God pour water over my soul and set me in a right direction. More than that, God provided people who took an interest in me and loved me enough to walk me through my success and failures. Looking back I can’t believe how lucky I was to be invited into God’s house. I can’t believe God built this house for me and he set a table before me and invited me to eat of his goodness and generosity.
